Traffic School Online is an online driver education platform that helps users complete traffic school courses and access state-specific enrollment information. The website supports a large amount of structured content, including course details, registration information, FAQs, blog content, forms, user access, and state-specific pages.

We contributed to the Drupal 10 implementation and modernization of the platform as part of a broader multi-site Drupal project. Our work covered the initial architecture review, content modelling, migration planning, reusable page components, state enrollment pages, webforms, metadata, and quality assurance across development and testing environments.

The project required a careful balance between common functionality shared across multiple websites and the unique content and presentation requirements of Traffic School Online.

Establishing the foundation

Drupal 10 content model

  • Basic page
  • Full-width page
  • Registration page
  • Blog
  • FAQ
  • News & reviews
  • Webforms

We began by reviewing the existing Drupal websites, their content types, fields, modules, templates, taxonomy structures, webforms, redirects, metadata, and custom editor configurations. This review helped identify which features could be shared across sites and which needed to remain specific to each website.

We also documented the existing content model and prepared the Drupal 10 architecture for the migration. The shared structure included content types such as:

  • Basic pages.
  • Full-width pages.
  • Registration pages.
  • Blog content.
  • Frequently asked questions.
  • News and review-related content where applicable.
  • Webforms and form submissions.

The implementation also included domain-related configuration so that the multi-site platform could manage content and settings in an organized way.

Creating flexible state pages

Course information & pricing, Introduction, Text & image, Box section, Lists & multi-column, Flash sale, Contact, FAQ, Course call to action, Banner

  • Florida
  • California
  • Arizona
  • Delaware

One of the main areas of work was the state details and enrollment experience. Traffic School Online needed to present different course information for individual states while maintaining a consistent page structure.

We created reusable Paragraph-based components and templates for the state pages, including:

  • Course information and pricing.
  • Introduction sections.
  • Text and image content.
  • Box sections with optional images.
  • Lists and multi-column content.
  • Flash sale course sections.
  • Contact sections.
  • FAQ content.
  • Course call-to-action areas.
  • Full-width banners and background sections.

The component structure allowed content editors to build and update state pages without creating a separate custom template for every variation. We also created specific templates and view modes to support single-column and two-column layouts, different content presentations, and the design requirements supplied by the frontend team.

Four state pages were created and configured during the implementation, including Florida, California, Arizona, and Delaware.

Turning designs into reusable components

Tabs to Accordions on smaller screens

  • Homepage
  • About Us
  • How It Works
  • Contact Us
  • Student Login
  • State enrollment
  • FAQ & listings
  • Blog & resources

The frontend designs were translated into Drupal templates, fields, blocks, and Paragraph types rather than being implemented as fixed page markup. This included creating a custom theme, configuring headers and footers, setting up menus and logos, and building homepage blocks based on the approved design.

We also developed the supporting structures for:

  • Homepage sections.
  • About Us.
  • How It Works.
  • Contact Us.
  • Student Login.
  • State enrollment pages.
  • FAQ and listing sections.
  • Blog and resource-style content.
  • Header, footer, and shared navigation areas.

The work included responsive adjustments, such as converting tabbed sections into accordions on smaller screens and reviewing the display of content across different layouts. This helped keep the website usable for visitors accessing courses and enrollment information from mobile devices, tablets, and desktop computers.

Forms and student access

Contact Us

  • Mandatory fields
  • Validation messages
  • Confirmation page
  • Student login
  • Password reset

Forms were an important part of the website because users need to contact the organization, access their accounts, and complete related processes. We created and configured Drupal Webforms for the required pages and rendered them within the appropriate page sections.

Our work included:

  • Creating the Contact Us form.
  • Configuring mandatory fields and validation messages.
  • Adding confirmation page content.
  • Placing forms within reusable page sections.
  • Resolving issues with form field labels and email validation.
  • Supporting webform submission migration.
  • Handling date and timezone differences in migrated submissions.
  • Fixing login and password reset links.
  • Reviewing redirects to external student login and registration pages.

For the migrated submissions, we created custom processing logic to format field values, combine temporary values, and handle changed and completed dates correctly. This was necessary because the source and destination systems handled form data and timezones differently.

Content, media, and metadata migration

CSV export to Drupal 10

Compared with the Drupal 7 source

  • Basic pages
  • Registration pages
  • Full-width pages
  • FAQs
  • Blog

A substantial part of the project involved migrating content from the legacy Drupal websites. We developed and executed migration scripts for Traffic School Online and related sites, covering content, users, taxonomies, media, webforms, and submissions.

For Traffic School Online, the migration included content such as Basic Pages, Registration pages, Full-width pages, FAQs, and Blog content. We also mapped media references and handled differences between legacy image fields and the newer media-based structure.

The migration work included:

  • Exporting source data into structured CSV files.
  • Creating migration scripts for individual content types.
  • Mapping content fields and entity relationships.
  • Migrating users and reviewing account data.
  • Migrating taxonomy terms and removing duplicate entries.
  • Mapping images, files, and media references.
  • Creating URL alias patterns.
  • Re-importing content in development and quality-control environments.
  • Comparing migrated records with the Drupal 7 source.
  • Reviewing missing, duplicate, or unnecessary content.

We also configured standard and content-specific metatags, including title and description values and structured metadata requirements. Where fields were missing after migration, we added the required configuration and verified the results on the target platform.

Quality assurance and release support

Development to Release

QC

  • Content counts
  • Media references
  • Taxonomy relationships
  • URL aliases and redirects
  • Access behaviour
  • Header and footer
  • FAQ accordions
  • Login links
  • Form validation
  • Metadata and schema
  • Mobile tabs
  • Drupal 7 vs 10 output

The implementation was delivered through development and QC environments, with changes reviewed and promoted in stages. We worked closely with the frontend, design, server, and QA teams to resolve issues before release.

Testing and refinement covered:

  • Content counts and migrated field values.
  • Media and file references.
  • Taxonomy relationships.
  • URL aliases and redirects.
  • Page authorization and access behaviour.
  • Header, footer, banner, and button sections.
  • FAQ and accordion functionality.
  • Login and password reset links.
  • Form validation and confirmation pages.
  • Metadata and schema-related fields.
  • Mobile presentation of tabbed and content sections.
  • Differences between Drupal 7 and Drupal 10 output.

Issues were investigated, fixed, and re-tested across the relevant environments. Pull requests and release notes were prepared for completed work before tickets were passed to QA or the frontend team.

The result

A structured Drupal 10 foundation

The work helped move Traffic School Online onto a structured Drupal 10 foundation with reusable components for state-based course pages and a more manageable content model. The platform supports a consistent experience across its homepage, informational content, enrollment pages, forms, and student access areas while allowing state-specific information to be maintained independently. The combination of reusable Paragraph components, structured migration scripts, configurable forms, metadata support, and staged quality assurance created a flexible base for ongoing updates to the online traffic school platform.
