Overview
We supported the migration of an existing Drupal 7 website to Drupal 10, helping establish a modern and maintainable foundation for long-term growth. The project involved transferring a wide range of structured content and configuration while preserving relationships between different content elements.
The migration required more than a basic content export and import. The website used Paragraphs to create flexible page layouts, along with taxonomies, media, user accounts, and multiple content types. We developed a reliable migration approach to move this data into Drupal 10 while maintaining its structure, references, and usability for content editors.
The challenge
Problem
The existing Drupal 7 platform contained a large amount of interconnected content. Content relationships, taxonomy references, media associations, and reusable Paragraph components needed to be handled carefully to prevent broken links, missing data, or changes to the existing page structure.
The migration also provided an opportunity to improve the website’s backend architecture and create a more organized content management experience for administrators and editors.
Our approach
Solution
We began by reviewing the existing Drupal 7 data model, content types, fields, taxonomies, media, users, and Paragraph configurations. Based on this assessment, we designed a migration structure that could transfer the data in a controlled and repeatable way.
Using Drupal’s Migration API, we created custom migration scripts for:
- User accounts and associated data.
- Taxonomies and term references.
- Content types and field data.
- Media entities and their relationships.
- Paragraph components and nested content structures.
- References between content, taxonomies, media, and Paragraphs.
Special attention was given to Paragraphs because they formed an important part of the website’s page-building system. We ensured that the migrated components retained their correct order, field values, references, and relationships with the relevant content.
Backend structure
Alongside the migration work, we designed and implemented a structured Drupal 10 backend to support efficient content management. The content model was organized to make commonly used fields, components, media, and taxonomy references easier to manage.
The new structure was designed with maintainability and future development in mind, allowing the website to support additional content and functionality without unnecessary complexity.
Testing and quality assurance
We carried out testing throughout the migration process rather than treating quality assurance as a final step. Migration results were reviewed at both the data and page levels to verify that content had been transferred accurately.
Our testing included:
- Checking migrated content and field values.
- Verifying taxonomy and media references.
- Reviewing Paragraph-based page layouts.
- Identifying missing or duplicated records.
- Testing content relationships and internal links.
- Validating the administrative content editing experience.
- Re-running migration scripts to confirm consistency.
Git was used for version control and collaborative development, helping maintain a clear development history and supporting a controlled workflow across the project.
The result
A modern Drupal 10 foundation
The migration provided the website with a modern Drupal 10 foundation while preserving its existing content and complex page structures. The improved backend structure gives administrators and content editors a more organized management experience, while the custom migration framework provides a dependable basis for future updates and enhancements.
